Skies Surround Us

I live about a half-hour bike ride away from Timpanogos Lake (now known as Utah Lake) in the ancestral home of the Timpanogos people (now known as Provo, Utah). For a little over a decade now, it’s home, dear to me & full of dear ones. I guess these photos are an expression of my awe at the daily beauty of this sky, this land. I live here because this area was invaded and colonized, its native people and caretakers either killed or displaced. I am learning to care & to love.

Someone lays in a hammock looking at the night sky which has a pink aurora swash in it
Out in Utah desert stargazing and hoping for dancing aurora lights (wasn't disappointed)

I think I’ve always been drawn to the sky. I’ve been told that bird/pájaro & plane/avión were the first words I said (if this is true, then I think the next word could have been chocolate). Apparently, my eyes were often turned up to the sky, & they still are.

someone looks up at the stars at the salt flats, clouds lit yellow behind
A strange place, the salt flats

I use a Sony Mirrorless a6300 usually with the standard 18-50mm lens. For astrophotography I use a 12mm f2 lens, & then I also use a 55-220mm lens when I want to get closer in to things. I’ve recently acquired a Canon 90D with a 24mm f1.4 lens, & I am particularly excited to start taking some photos of the stars with that one.

For photo processing I use RawTherapee where I only know how to use a few of the modules; I learn & improve slowly. I try to process the funny, bland RAWs within a day or two so I can remember how I saw, the feeling of it.
